Donation Disclaimer
Important information regarding contributions to Crown Institute and Leadership & Governance Academy.
Nonprofit Status & Deductibility
Crown Institute is organized for educational and charitable purposes and is pursuing applicable nonprofit recognition. Until Crown Institute's federal tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code is formally confirmed, contributions to Crown Institute and to its initiative Leadership & Governance Academy ("LGA") should not be characterized as tax-deductible charitable contributions.
Donors should consult their tax advisor regarding the deductibility of any contribution.
When federal 501(c)(3) exemption is approved, the following statement will apply: "Contributions may be tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law." Until that approval is confirmed and published, the prior statement above governs.
No Goods or Services
Where a contribution is made to Crown Institute or LGA without any expectation or receipt of goods or services in return, the donor will (where applicable) receive a written acknowledgment reflecting that no goods or services were provided in exchange for the contribution. Specific acknowledgment language will conform to applicable Internal Revenue Service guidelines once Crown Institute's exemption is formally recognized.
Sponsorship vs. Donation
Sponsorship and donation are distinct categories of institutional support and are handled differently:
- Sponsorship involves a defined exchange of recognition, visibility, and other benefits in connection with LGA programming (including the Summit, the Leadership Awards & Gala, certification pathways, and academies). Sponsorship is governed by the applicable sponsorship agreement. Sponsorship payments are generally treated as institutional support and are not characterized as charitable contributions.
- Donation is a contribution made without the expectation or receipt of goods, services, or sponsorship benefits in return. Donations support Crown Institute's educational mission, including LGA programming, civic leadership development, and related initiatives.
Restricted Gifts
Donors may indicate a preferred area of support (for example, the Youth Leadership Academy, the Civic Leadership Academy, or scholarship support for the Summit). Crown Institute will make reasonable efforts to honor donor-indicated preferences consistent with the institutional mission, but reserves the right to direct funds where the need is greatest if a restricted purpose becomes unworkable or is no longer aligned with the mission.
Refund Limitations
Donations are generally non-refundable. Requests for refunds of erroneous, duplicate, or otherwise extraordinary transactions may be considered on a case-by-case basis and should be submitted promptly through the contact form.
Donor Record-Keeping
Donors are responsible for retaining their own records of contribution amounts and dates, including bank statements and written acknowledgments received from Crown Institute or LGA. Crown Institute may, in its discretion, provide donors with an annual or contribution-specific acknowledgment reflecting the gift; the form and content of any such acknowledgment will conform to applicable institutional and tax guidelines.
Important
No portion of this disclaimer should be interpreted as a representation that contributions are currently tax-deductible. Such a representation will only be made after Crown Institute's federal tax-exempt recognition is formally confirmed and published.
